'Sword Art Online', the popular animated television series based on the light novels of author Reki Kawahara, will be adapted into a full feature film. The series received widespread success globally. Fans will be treated to a never-before-seen storyline - one that is entirely different from the original series.

According to IGN, the planned theatrical version was revealed at the Dengeki Bunko Autumn Festival last October 4, 2015. Original light novel author Reki Kawahara is all set to bring his work to the silver screen and will be writing the screenplay for director Tomohiko Ito's adaptation. Kawahara's popular series take place in the future - specifically 2022 - and centers on worlds of virtual reality.

The writer's novels were first published in April 2009 and went on to spawn manga and anime adaptations as well as video games. According to Crunchyroll, a four-disc music collection featuring music used in 'Sword Art Online', 'Sword Art Online II', 'Sword Art Online: Extra Edition TV Film' and other unpublished works will also be released in Japan on January 27, 2016. The standard edition is reported to retail for 3800 yen including tax while the limited edition will retail for 4500 yen and comes with a Bluray bonus.

News of the much-awaited feature film isn't the only exciting piece of information gathered by fans at the Autumn Festival held in Akihabara. According to Rocket News 24, the visitors were also treated to a teaser trailer that featured characters and special highlights from the popular anime series. It was further reported that Kawahara will create an entirely new storyline for the upcoming film - one that has not yet been told in previous releases.

The anime series received generally positive reviews from critics, praising the unusual angle of virtual reality and its implications on modern society. It features various characters absorbed in a Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (VRMMORPG) after using a virtual reality helmet called the NerveGear. The whole adventure begins with Kirito and Klein realizing that they are trapped within the game and have to clear multiple levels in order to go back home.

'Sword Art Online' is a planned animated film based on the popular series of the same name. Additional details will be released in the October 10 issue of Dengeki Bunko Magazine.
