CyanogenMod ROMS have been widely popular for their look and improved customizability and features compared to vanilla stock. It is based on Google's own Android stock versions.
However, not every device can be fitted with a CyanogenMod ROM. There are only a few which are supported by the custom ROM.
With their success and popularity, the custom ROMS have even made its way as the stock operating systems for several phones from OnePlus and YU. It is expected that more smartphone manufacturers will be collaborating with the company for their future releases.
The CyanogenMod 12.1 snapshot isn't the first to be released. The Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update for the custom ROMS were added last month, according to Android Police.
Millions of Android users were believed to be affected by the so-called "Stagefright" vulnerability. The flaw allowed a hacker to remotely compromise a phone just by sending a modified MMS message. In some cases, the message doesn't even need to be opened in order to be activated.
Google promised monthly updates to patch up most of the phones. The new October update includes over 27,000 individual commits, according to Android Headlines.
With the CyanogenMod 12.1 snapshot, some are even more excited with newer builds. Google recently launched the Android 6.0 Marshmallow version update with its new line of Nexus devices.
There have been CyanogenMod 13 code commits spotted in their Gerrit repository, according to Phandroid. The newer build could finally bring Android M for users.
CyanogenMod 12.1 snapshot is available for the Nexus 4, Nexus 9 and the Nexus 7 2013 models. Other models are also included in their list.
