New iPhone Virus YiSpecter Can Also Infiltrate Non-Jailbroken iOS Devices

After the XcodeGhost debacle, iOS users are now concerned about another iPhone virus called YiSpecter that can compromise both non-jailbroken and jailbroken devices.

Apple has already started to clean up the mess from the recent virus attack that left the App Store unsecure because of modified apps. Several apps were thought to be affected, but it turns out that the number was greater.

Initially, the number was only about 40 iOS apps more or less. However, Appthority reported that there almost 500 apps that held the malicious code.

In addition, around 2 million users were thought to be affected. The XcodeGhost malware came from modified versions of the Xcode development software, according to Forbes.

Now, another virus for the iPhone and iPad devices has been spotted. Dubbed as YiSpecter, the malware is believed to have been running rampant for 10 months.

Palo Alto Networks said that YiSPecter was prevalent in Taiwan and China, according to Tech Week Europe. The iOS malware is also the first to use private APIs to execute its attacks.

Apple has claimed that the iPhone virus only affects iOS users that still run older versions of their operating system. In addition, the users may have also downloaded the malware unsuspectingly from untrusted sources.

The Cupertino-based tech giant has said that the issue was already addressed in iOS 8.4. Apple is now urging its customers to stay updated on security fixes and iOS versions to prevent further hacking attacks.

Previously, non-jailbroken devices were thought to be secure against any iPhone virus. The recent attacks from XcodeGhost and YiSpecter malware has proven that hackers have progressed with their tactics.

YiSpecter and XcodeGhost are believed to be created by different hackers, according to The Register. Still, both have potentially damaging effects to iOS devices.

The new iPhone virus can still be prevented. iOS users should just update to the latest and current version if they want to block such attacks.
