T-Mobile pays US$308 million for more wireless spectrum

By

On Friday, T-Mobile said it had signed an agreement with US Cellular spectrum that would allow it to set foot in the regions of Mississippi River Valley. For about US$308 million, the wireless carrier's range would boost. Exactly 32 million individuals in 29 markets would be covered by the company's acquisition of 10MHz of Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) spectrum.

"In today's marketplace, spectrum is gold," John Legere, T-Mobile CEO, remarked. "This is a rare opportunity to secure precious AWS spectrum in key markets that will immediately be put to use by both T-Mobile and MetroPCS customers."

T-Mobile said the extra range would enable it to incrementally even out its 4G LTE system coverage to new markets. It would further enlarge the current 4G LTE bandwidth in the area.

US Cellular CEO, Kenneth Meyers, stated "We're pleased to have achieved significant value for this spectrum license, as we continue to evaluate opportunities to create additional value for our shareholders."

The deal was expected to be finalized within the last few months of 2013 although it was still subject to regulatory approval.
