'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' director James Gunn is currently in pre-production in Atlanta and has recently revealed brand new plot hints as well as his favorite characters. Benicio del Toro is confirmed to reprise his role as The Collector in the sequel.
According to Comic Book Resources, Gunn talked more about his upcoming film during a Q&A session on his Facebook page. He said that fans can expect something different for his second film in the series and hinted that there will be at least one new character to join in. He didn't mention specifics on the matter however, he stressed that Nebula will play an important role in the follow-up.
Karen Gillan played Nebula in the preceding film. Nebula is Thanos' adopted daughter and is sister to Gamora. She is depicted as a powerful supervillain in the comic book series and also appeared as an enemy of the Avengers as well as the Silver Surfer.
Gunn proceeded to reveal that Groot will remain as Baby Groot as seen in the mid-credits of the first film and that Drax will not be fond of the creature, according to Nerdist. Groot, the tree-like humanoid and close companion of Rocket the raccoon, was initially obliterated after protecting his comrades from a devastating crash. Groot is voiced by returning actor Vin Diesel while Drax the Destroyer is portrayed by Dave Bautista.
Diesel and Bautista won't be the only cast members reprising their roles for the sequel. /Film confirmed that Benicio del Toro will return as The Collector. It was reported that the importance of his role remains unknown however, it was previously speculated that his character may play a pivotal part in the events of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Taneleer Tivan, otherwise known as The Collector, is one of the Elders of the Universe and curator of one of the largest collection of relics and species in the known galaxy. He possesses the power to manipulate cosmic energy as well as increasing his size and strength at will. He currently has one of the Infinity Stones in his possession due to his dealings with Asgardians and the Guardians of the Galaxy.
'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' is set to be released on May 5, 2017. The sequel, written and directed by James Gunn, will be the third film in MCU's Phase Three. Its predecessor was a massive cinematic success, earning $774 million against a $195 million budget according to Box Office Mojo.
