'Pet Sematary' is a popular Stephen King novel first published in 1983. It was first adapted on the big-screen in 1989 by Mary Lambert and was met with critical and financial success in the box office. Director Guillermo del Toro expressed his desire to remake the horror classic into another live-action adaptation.
According to AV Club, del Toro expressed his enthusiasm over the prospect of remaking famed horror genre author Stephen King's iconic 1983 novel of the same name. He posted on his personal twitter account, "Book of the Day: PET SEMATARY by Stephen King. Unrelentingly dark and emotional. Compulsive reading. Would kill to make it on film." Fans were quick to relish on the idea of a big-screen remake that may or may not replicate the original adaptation done by Mary Lambert back in 1989.
Another article from Nerdist reported that Lambert collaborated with King himself who worked as screenwriter for the first live-action adaptation released in April 29, 1989 under Paramount Pictures. King even made a cameo as a minister in what was considered one of his best movie adaptations to date. Its soundtrack also featured an original song from the popular punk rock band The Ramones.
Lambert went on to direct an ambitious sequel entitled 'Pet Sematary Two'. However, it met less financial success and ended up widely panned by critics and audiences alike.
King's novel follows the story of the Creeds who move into their new home in Maine. They soon learn that a pet cemetery hidden behind their house has the power to bring to life the deceased buried in its grounds. Events take a turn for the worst when the family realize that the dead do come back - but more terrifying than ever.
According to ScreenRant, del Toro wasn't the first to express interest in a possible remake of the horror classic. Juan Carlo Fresnadillo of '28 Days Later' fame was also attached to direct a 2010 version, which failed to come into conception.
Del Toro is best known for his dark fantasy and horror pieces such as 'The Devil's Backbone', 'Pan's Labyrinth', 'Blade II' and 'Hellboy'. He recently debuted his latest gothic romance film 'Crimson Peak' starring Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston, Charlie Hunnam and Jessica Chastain. The Mexican filmmaker also has numerous awards and nominations under his belt.
