'Mirror's Edge: Catalyst' Update: James Slavin Calls Second Installment 'Rebirth' of the Franchise; Game Promises Much Better Open-World Environment

The first installment of "Mirror's Edge" was developed by DICE, a team known for Battlefield. Now, the new project entitled "Mirror's Edge: Catalyst" is in production and audio director James Slavin coins it as a "rebirth" of the franchise. In addition, the upcoming game reportedly promises a much better open-world environment than its predecessor.

According to VentureBeat, "Mirror's Edge: Catalyst" has since been rumored to be in production, but it was only after five years when EA confirmed its development. The long-awaited game is not meant to be neither a prequel nor a reboot, at least for audio director James Slavin. He would rather reportedly call it as a "rebirth" of the franchise.

"Mirror's Edge: Catalyst" is set to be a first-person action adventure centered on Faith, the main protagonist, who rises to become the hero of the city she inhabits. Slavin reportedly explained that the character should not be depicted as a superhero, as she doesn't use any special weapons or powers of some sorts. Instead, she uses her body as well as its effect on the environment, so as to take advantage on her foes.

Meanwhile, Crossmap reported that the 2nd installment to "Mirror's Edge" franchise will deliver a much better open-world environment. EA reportedly wants to ensure that the game would appeal to the core fans as well as to a broader audience of action-adventure fanatics.

Senior producer Sara Jansson explained that "Mirror's Edge: Catalyst" revolves around a city, not a bunch of different levels. Players can "move seamlessly through it," uncover vast areas to free roam, and, most importantly, discover locations "without any loading screens or ever stopping."

In fact, as what The Koalition claimed, the view of the whole city from high above is simply remarkable and players can have the freedom to go to many places. And unlike the original game, which was more linear in terms of design, "Mirror's Edge Catalyst" is far more open ended with wherever players want to go.

In the meantime, gamers can keep imagining what this open-world environment might be, as "Mirror's Edge: Catalyst" will not be released in Xbox One, PC and PlayStation 4 until February 23, 2016.
