'King Kong vs. Godzilla' is officially slated for release some time in 2020. Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have teamed up to create a reboot of the film originally released back in 1962. It will feature the iconic monsters King Kong and Godzilla simultaneously on the big-screen.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. has teamed up with Legendary Pictures to bring a monster mash-up to the big-screens that features the iconic King Kong and his daikaju counterpart Godzilla. The two studios have collaborated on a new cinematic franchise focusing on the two legends that will kick off with 2017's 'Kong: Skull Island' followed by 2018's 'Godzilla 2' and finally 'King Kong vs. Godzilla' in 2020.

A statement released by Warner Bros. and Legendary read, "All-powerful monsters become towering heroes for a new generation, revealing a mythology that brings together Godzilla and Legendary's King Kong in an ecosystem of other giant super-species, both classic and new. Monarch, the human organization that uncovered Godzilla in the 2014 film, will expand their mission across multiple releases." 'Kong: Skull Island' is set to begin production this month.

King Kong and Godzilla first clashed way back in 1962. According to WhatCulture, the Japanese science-fiction monster film was the first time both characters ever appeared simultaneously in color and in widescreen. It went on to become the most commercially successful Godzilla films to date.

According to Moviepilot, King Kong and Godzilla won't be the only monsters to battle it out on the big-screen. The new installments in the franchise will also feature other never-before-seen super species. It was speculated that monsters such as Rodan, Mothra and King Ghidorah may also make an appearance in what is now known as the "monster cinematic universe".

'King Kong vs. Godzilla' is the third film in the planned monster trilogy. It will make it cinematic debut some time in 2020. The original Japanese film from the 1960's proved to be a critical and commercial success in its home country as well as in the United States.
