Remember how as kids you always wanted to have fingerprint sensors like they did on spy movies? Now it's on our phones, and things are going to get a bit more interesting. Google has listed the requirements for fingerprint sensors to be followed by OEMs to make sure they work properly on 6.0.
Developers have been given API guidelines to follow as well to make sure that data of Android phone users are kept secure. The requirements, therefore have included both hardware and software and OEMs have to follow them in order to use Google's system and have support for all the apps that will use the standard Android APIs.
Aside from requirements for fingerprint sensors, Google has also stated a minimum requirement of having an unmodified Doze mode. How Doze mode works is that if a device goes unused for a certain amount of time it goes into an advanced form of standby mode where apps remain asleep and wakelocks are ignored.
In addition, Google has followed Apple's lead in requiring full disk encryption, which will give Android 6.0 users more security with keeping their data and information private. Though, FDE will not yet be strictly implemented with older phone models running on Lollipop, Marshmallow has made things a bit more strict and strongly suggests that Full Data Encryption be a 'Must'
To adapt to the implementation of higher standards for security, OEMs are now in a hustle to catch up and comply with the CDD released by Google early this week. OEMs have also been strongly advised to provide a passcode to wrap the encryption key.
This will ensure that the devices are encrypted by default and not just be dependent on relying on the user to set up a passcode, which most users will find to be a bit too tedious.
