20th Century Fox is moving ahead with the Gambit solo film, and after director Rupert Wyatt bowed out from the directorial position. Recent rumors suggest Doug Liman could take over soon as he is currently in negotiations to join the film with Channing Tatum still on lead role.
As reported by Comingsoon.net, Wyatt left the film a month ago citing creative differences between him and the studio as the reasons of his departure. Wyatt's departure caused even bigger trouble for the film which currently has Channing Tatum confirmed to star in the lead role, although Spectre actress Lea Seydoux is also heavily linked to the project.
However, according to Collider, things might be looking up for the film as Jeff Snieder recently tweeted that Fox is currently eyeing on Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman to sit in the director's chair. Liman has been notable as one capable of producing successful films, but some of his works were also controversial for going over the budget or schedule and massive changes in the film.
Moreover, Liman also currently has a couple of planned projects on him as he is currently in post-production for his crime drama with Tom Cruise, Mena, as well as the planned Edge of Tomorrow sequel and Luna Park.
As reported by Screen Rant, with Fox's negative experience with Fantastic Four director Josh Trank, the studio, at present, could be looking for someone who shares the same vision as them. Also with X-Men: Apocalypse ending an aspect of their storyline, and Hugh Jackman's announcement that the upcoming Wolverine film will be his last time portraying the character, the studio will need more superhero films in order to keep up with the growing Warner Bros' DCEU and Marvel's MCU.
Gambit will center on a mutant from New Orleans whose abilities include charging things with kenetic energy which he uses in battles. The film's screenplay is written by Joshua Zeturner from treatment by Chris Claremont. It is currently set to hit theaters in October 07, 2016.
