2016 Samsung Galaxy phones rumored to have power-saving Exynos processors; Will Qualcomm Snapdragon chip still be on board?

The 2016 Samsung Galaxy phones are expected to have two Exynos processors capable of prolonging battery life. It is unclear whether Samsung will still use Qualcomm Snapdragon chips on its 2016 Galaxy phones, particularly the Galaxy S7.

Samsung will reportedly power its 2016 smartphones with two kinds of Exynos processors that are designed to maximize battery life. Tech Times reported that the 2016 Samsung Galaxy phones will have both Exynos 7800 and Exynos 7650 on board.

Both Exynos processors are built with 28nm range. The 64-bit Exynos 7800 is considered more advanced because it packs a 1.8 GHz Cortex-A72 core and a 1.3 GHz Cortex-A53 with big.LITTLE architecture and ARM Mali-T860MP4 GPU. On the other hand, the Exynos 7650 will have 1.7 GHz Cortex-A72 core, a 1.3 GHz Cortex-A53, an ARM Mali-T860MP3, and a big.LITTLE structure as well.

The report continued to claim that the new Samsung Exynos processors to power 2016 Galaxy phones will have a power-saving feature that will maximize battery life of phones. Samsung stated, "Being able to enjoy some great features for as long as you need it for is also very vital and this is always at the forefront of what Exynos is about." A Galaxy phone will run the more advanced chips for apps requiring heavy processing power and the lower-clocked processors for lighter app use.

Another rumor earlier reported by Venture Capital Post is that the Samsung Galaxy S7, one of the expected 2016 Galaxy phones, will run both Qualcomm Snapdragon and Samsung Exynos chipsets. The report said that Samsung will release a Galaxy S7 with Snapdragon for the international market while a Galaxy S7 variant housing local Exynos SoC is intended for the Korean market. However, this rumor has not been confirmed by Samsung.

Recently, Samsung has been falling behind its rival Apple in terms of smartphone sales. CNET reported that Samsung will be launching the Galaxy S7 in January 2016 to beef up its competition against Apple and other device makers. It was reported that the company is already securing components needed to produce the Galaxy S7 phones.

Samsung is said to add another price category called "sub premium" that will cater to consumers who want high-end phones but are not willing to pay the price. The company's current smartphones are categorized into three: low end, mid-range, and high end.
