Some audience think that Rick Castle (Nathan Fillion) and Kate Beckett (Stana Katic) will eventually rekindle their relationship like they always do, yet last Monday's episode "The Nose" was rather the turning point in the couple's relationship. There are others, however, who see the breakup in the beginning of "Castle" Season 8 as a tactic from the new showrunners on rebranding the series.
The Castle-Beckett breakup indeed affected the show's current ratings. According to a recent post from Carter Matt, the show's ratings have declined since season 8 started and the rating of episode 5 was particularly low as it "drew a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic" and the reason mainly for this decline was the breakup of the two main characters.
Co-showrunner Alexi Hawley in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, assured the fans that a divorce would not happen anytime in the future. According to her, the breakup at the start of the season was "an obstacle that is going to make them ultimately stronger as a couple once they get through it." Both Castle and Beckett play important roles in the show and their partnership, both professionally and personally, is what makes the show exciting.
To recap "Castle" season 8 episode 5, though it had a heartbreaking ending, the show has maintained its humor especially with Mia (Stephnie Weir), the sole witness to the crime, and her very powerful nose. Mia did not like the idea of helping out the police but the nosy Castle had something up his sleeve. In a post from Entertainment Weekly, it seemed like Mia and Castle made a "bizarre and effective team" while Beckett turned her focus on other things which included solving her mother's death.
There is a lot in store for "Castle" Season 8 for Rick Castle and Kate Beckett when it comes to solving crimes. The duo's professional relationship is always intact and fans are hoping that their personal relationship follows through.
"Castle" Season 8 airs every Monday night at 10pm on ABC.
