Flash Google Nexus 4 with AOSP Android 6.0 Marshmallow custom ROM

By

Recently, Google has announced its latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow. It'll be available to selected Google Nexus devices via OTA update. Moreover, the Nexus 4 wasn't included to the list of devices that will be receiving the OTA Update of Marshmallow. However, the Android 6.0 Marshmallow update can also be flashed to Nexus 4 via AOSP custom ROM.

The Google Nexus 5, 6, 7 and 9 as well as Nexus Player are receiving the Marshmallow OTA update. Moreover, Google introduces its new flagships that will be running with Android 6.0 Marshmallow as its default operating system during the latest conference in San Francisco.

As reported by IBTimes, Grinberg, the Software Engineer who was actively part of Google's Android Wear team, had released a guide on how to build Marshmallow for Nexus 4. The guide was also attached with a pre-built AOSP (Android Open Source Project) Marshmallow image, which is reportedly posted last October 8. Furthermore, some recent tutorials and uploaded builds are spreading throughout the internet, as well as the kernel built that Grinberg made.

As noted by Tech Time, here are the guidelines and tutorials of flashing the Marshamallow custom ROM for Nexus 4 devices. It is highly suggested to follow the steps carefully because it is so risky procedure to execute.

1. Transfer the TWRP file to the Nexus 4.

2. Update or Install TWRP (TeamWin Recovery Project) 2.8.7.0.

3. Boot into Recovery Mode. The Quick Boot app should easily do this for you if the phone is rooted. If you don't have it, turn off the phone and boot it while holding down the volume up, volume down and power button at the same time. Once the TWRP loading screen pops up, let go of the buttons.

4. Reset to Factory Settings. Once the TWRP UI loads up, tap on wipe and select Factory Reset. You can also choose Advance Wipe but make sure the tick the boxes next to System, Data, Cache and Dalvik Cache. Swipe to commence.

5. After the Factory Reset, transfer one of the two ROM-GApps combo to the phone.

6. Reboot into Recovery Mode once again and once the TWRP UI loads up, choose Install.

7. Locate the ROM and select it. Swipe and it should begin installing. The whole process will take just a few minutes. Note that when the installation is successful, it will indicate that the process is done.

8. Install GApps once the ROM is installed. The procedure is the same as the ROM installation. For vocoderism's ROM-GApps combo, a fix is provided for when it poses problems.

9. Reboot once done and enjoy Android Marshmallow on your Nexus 4.

10. At this stage, you can also root with SuperSU if you want.

On the other hand, Grinberg isn't alone of working to bring the Marshmallow to the Nexus 4. Some of Android developers uploaded their contribution such as tutorials and instruction to the forum where the developers gather. Additionally, the images of AOSP Marshmallow build were compiled by the senior member of XDA Developers Community. Based on XDA Developers Community, vocoderism is one of those who support the pull off of Marshmallow build in the left behind Nexus 4.

On another note, there are various uploaded video tutorial pertaining to the instruction of how to flash AOSP Marshmallow custom ROM to Google Nexus 4 for better and easier to understand. Lastly, users should notice that the sites who've posted instructions always put a reminder of flashing ROM can be easy but definitely risky, as it can brick the device totally.
