Samsung Galaxy S5 gets an Android 5.1.1 Lollipop Update

By

AT&T and other retailers have started rolling out Android 5.1.1 Lollipop to Samsung Galaxy S5 users, which includes updates on security fixes that will address the concern on the Stagefright 1.0 and the Stagefright 2.0 exploits.

Google has been making big announcements on Android 6.0 Marshmallow and their in-house smartphones may be launching with the new mobile operating system. For other OEMs however, Android 5.1.1 Lollipop is the biggest leap as of the moment as the new OS will only be made available to other third-party device companies by early next year, says Latino Post.

To check if the update is available, Samsung Galaxy S5 users can check their phone settings and check for software updates to see if Android 5.1.1 is ready and available for installation. This can be accessed by going to Galaxy S5's Settings->Device->Software Update->Update Now.Ne

According to NeuroGadget, upgrading one's Android operating system to 5.1.1 Lollipop will require about 50% of battery life, 609 to 999 MB of free unused memory storage and reliable WiFi connection.

Tech Times shares that the update is available Over The Air (OTA), but is unfortunately limited to the Galaxy S5 (SM-G900A). The S5 Active (G870A) and the S5 mini (G800A) do not have the upgrades.

Samsung Galaxy S5 was released in 2014 with a 5.1-inch super AMOLED capacitive touch-screen display, Qualcomm MSM8974AC Snapdragon 801 chipset and a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels at 432ppi. The device came with the OS Android 4.4.2 KitKat, but was quickly given an Android 5.0 update.

There is no word yet on whether the Samsung Galaxy S4 will be seeing a 5.1.1 for its users, or whether it will be making a leap directly to Android 6.0 next year. For users who want to address issues on security without the OS update, they can access the stock version of the Android ROM which can be downloaded and installed manually.
