Marvel is moving ahead with MCU's phase 3, and much-anticipation has been circling around the upcoming Captain Marvel. Actress Olivia Wilde and director Reed Morano have recently expressed their interest as lead star and director, respectively.
What started as a little joke on Twitter has turned into a campaign for the directorial and lead actor posts in the project for Wilde and Morano. However, during their talk to Cinema Blend the two have been outspoken about their objectives for the much-anticipated Marvel heroine.
During the interview, Wilde admitted that she is a big fan of superhero films and greatly respects Marvel Cinematic Universe. Moreover, she also noted her observations about the studio's heroes as characters with flaws and complexities but when they are translated to the films, the heroines tend to be presented as perfect, which is an aspect Wilde suggests to alter.
"Marvel has been so smart about casting unexpected people for these roles. Look at what Robert Downey brought to Iron Man. A real, dry sense of humor and a complexity to his hero balance," Wilde said.
"The thing with female superheroes is that, in order to be powerful, they are flawless. The idea of kick-ass power lacks a certain nuance, at times. There is something to be said for a female director working to create a female superhero that perhaps [has] a little more complexity," she added.
Meanwhile, Morano said that she would be up for the project because she believes that "The most interesting characters are the ones who have issues and are flawed individuals". She further added that she would want to give a real history and a tangible background for the character.
While it remains to be seen whether Morano and/or Wilde will indeed get the coveted posts, Blastr noted that Wilde's commendable performances in previous projects such as Tron: Legacy makes her a fine choice for the role. Morano's directorial performance in their upcoming feature film Meadowland could also dictate her chances in getting the Captain Marvel gig.
Wilde and Morano are not the first personalities to be linked to the project as MMA fighter and actress Ronda Rousey also previously revealed her interest in taking the titular role. Furthermore, while Marvel has not revealed details about the cast and crew Movie Pilot reported Marvel's Jeremy Latchman and Kevin Feige previous statements that they are not closing their doors on anyone, and are keeping themselves open to fan casting.
No director and actors have been attached to Captain Marvel as of yet, but more details are expected to be revealed when production takes progress. It is written by Meg LeFauve as well as Nicole Perlman, and it is currently slated to hit theaters on March 8, 2019.
