The Jaeger Pilots might not be back in action anytime soon but Guillermo Del Toro is still holding on to Pacific Rim 2 and revealed that its budget and script have been turned in. On the other hand, Legendary and Universal said that they are merely giving the project some time to develop.
Despite the film's ejection from its 2017 release date, Del Toro remains committed to the project and even shared via Twitter that a script and budget has been submitted to the studio. "PACIFIC RIM 2: Budget and script went in. No answers yet. If anything happens, I will post. If nothing happens, I will just keep rambling", Del Toro wrote.
Pacific Rim 2's previous July 21, 2017 release date is now being occupied by Pitch Perfect 3. Although according to The Hollywood Reporter , Legendary and Universal assured fans that they remain committed to the sequel and added that it was taken out from its 2017 play date to give it more time to develop.
"To this end, the decision was made to delay the production and release of Pacific Rim 2 so that the creative team can continue in its efforts to exceed the amazing experience of the first film", the studios' statement stated.
Plot details are currently scarce, although as cited by Cinema Blend, Del Toro previously teased on setting it in a world that is free from Kaijus. It will feature the return of Dr. Newton Geiszler and Dr. Hermann Gottlieb as well as the central characters Mako Mori, Raleigh Becket, and Hannibal Chau among many others.
Moreover, as reported by /Film, new characters could also be included in the film as the director hinted on getting 'Game of Thrones' actress Maisie Williams in a currently undisclosed role. With the script and the budget submitted, the wait will now begin on whether or not the project will receive the greenlight from the studios.
The first film in the franchise earned $101 million domestically, and pulled in $309 million internationally from its $190 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo. More details about Pacific Rim 2 is expected to be revealed in the coming months.
