It looks like all hopes and possibilities of "Wayward Pines" being extended for another season have been shot down with EP Chad Hodge's pronouncements that the whole story has already been told in the first season and that it would be impossible to continue forward with the series.
"Wayward Pines" was a welcome venue for M. Night Shyamalan to return to a genre he is famous for. The first season ended with a cliffhanger that led many to hope for a Season 2. It has been previously reported that Shyamalan was in talks with book author Blake Crouch for a possible new story line.
Hodge further explained that the show was designed as a mini-series and not as a series that could continue indefinitely reports Ecumenical News. The show was based on Crouch's book trilogy and has covered all the source materials it was based on although with an altered ending. Where the books ended with Ethan Burke (played by Matt Dillon) waking up in the far future, "Wayward Pines" Season 1 ended with Burke sacrificing himself and the town overtaken by kids of the First Generation.
Without any book to base on for the second season, an entirely new storyline would have to be written by Crouch. Fox Entertainment Group CEO Dana Walden said that despite Hodge's statement, the show will continue if Crouch can lay the groundwork for a new set of books for the show to adapt. This will mean then that "Wayward Pines" Season 2 could take some time to happen if Fox has to wait for Crouch to publish the novels and for Shyamalan to develop them for TV.
Although everything about the show is uncertain for now, fans have some speculations on how the show can move forward. IBTimes reports that in Episode 6 of Season 1, Ethan finally discovered the truth about Wayward Pines and realized that it was already the year 4028. Humans have been in cryochambers for 2000 years because genetically mutated human carnivores called aberrations or abbies have dominated the world.
If the series would move forward, fans speculate that Burke's son would become the central character. However, there are other speculations that "Wayward Pines" Season 2 will be focusing on Adam Hassler (Tim Griffin) who will lead an expedition out of the village to find other survivors. Deadline reports of another theory that involves finding a cure for the abbies instead of escaping Wayward Pines.
Fans cannot seem to let go of their hopes for "Wayward Pines" Season 2. Ultimately, the fate of the show appears to be in the hands of Blake Crouch and how fast he can provide the books for the show to be based on.
