'Bad Santa 2' Movie starts filming in January; Studios announced Mark Waters as the new director

Just a few weeks after the official announcement of "Bad Santa 2" movie, reports are saying that the movie seems to be progressing. On Tuesday, Miramax and Broad Green Pictures have announced a new director for the second installment movie.

In a report on Entertainment Weekly, it was confirmed that Mark Waters, best known for his "The Mean Girls" and "Mr. Popper's Penguin", will be sitting in the director's chair for the yuletide sequel movie. He will be working alongside Johnny Rosenthal, Doug Ellin (Entourage), and Shauna Cross (If I Stay, Whip It) as the screenwriters.

Billy Bob Thornton will be reprising his role as Santa Willie in "Bad Santa 2" movie. Furthermore, Empire has revealed that two old casts from the original movie will be returning. Tony Cox who portrayed elf Marcus and Brett Kelly known for his role as Thurman Merman (The Kid) will be joining Thornton for the second time around.

Back in 2003, Terry Zwigoff's "Bad Santa" has earned a total of $60 million nationwide and $75.6 million at the worldwide box office with a $23 million budget, according to Variety. Under the production of Geyer Kosinski, Gabriel and Daniel Hammond, Jessica Tuchinsky, Zanne Devine, David Thwaites and Waters will be the executive producers.

Sources say the upcoming sequel movie will be a spinoff of the first film. After 12 years, the audiences will witness what has happened or what shape has the three main characters namely Willie, Marcus and The Kid are in the "Bad Santa 2" movie.

Mark Waters has also directed "Freaky Friday". With his taste in sharp comedy films, some audiences say he is suitable for the upcoming project. Although the release schedule has not been announced yet, speculations arise that the studio targets a holiday 2016 release date.

Further details about the movie were kept under wraps. However, Mark Water's "Bad Santa 2" will start shooting in January.
