Kate Beckinsale is back as the ass-kicking, gun shooting, lycan terminating vampire Selene in the upcoming "Underworld 5: Next Generation". However, "Divergent: Allegiant" star Theo James who is also returning in the sequel is rumored to might actually take over the lead role in future films of the franchise.
Playing a vampiric ally in "Underworld: Awakening", Theo James did not really do much in the fourth movie. Fans however think that James should have a bigger role in the film. In an online poll from Fashion Style, a lot of fans want to see more of Theo James in action and less on Selene and Michael's romance. This fueled the rumors that the actor might take over Selene's position as lead role in the franchise's future movies, especially now that James' "Divergent" series is nearing its conclusion.
So it seems a new hero is on the rise, with new clan leaders and a possible new storyline. Such details would be fitting for the title "Next Generation". Polygon reports filming has begun in Prague and the cast is scheduled to spend the next ten weeks there.
In related news, Forbes reports that the upcoming film is not being directed by Len Wiseman but by Anne Foerster. A female director for a franchise lead by a femme fatale is something fans should look forward to. Moreover, taking a look at Foerster's track record of being an FX person, unit director, cinematographer and television director, fans can expect a new blend to the darkness of the franchise.
This possible shift in storylines may divide the fanbase as there are few action movies that have female lead characters. Until Lakeshore Entertainment and Screen Gems puts out a another press release, fans would just have to wait for the next big scoop.
The war between Vampires and Lycans continues as Kate Beckinsale and Theo James come back in "Underworld Next Generation". The movie will hit theaters October of 2016.
