Sandra Bullock will lead a new all-female cast as the upcoming film's main protagonist, replacing George Clooney's character from the first reboot back in 2001. According to IndieWIRE, a new 'Ocean's Eleven' remake is in the works to be directed by Gary Ross of 'The Hunger Games', 'Seabiscuit' and 'Pleasantville' fame. The gender-swapping new film will be the second remake of the classic rat pack film released in 1960.
The original heist film directed by Lewis Milestone starred Frank Sinatra, Peter Lawford, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Joey Bishop. It centered on a series of robberies in Las Vegas. Steven Soderbergh adapted the film into a 2001 comedy that starred George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Andy Garcia, Julia Roberts, Bernie Mac and Don Cheadle.
According to Vox, Clooney's main character will be replaced by Bullock. It won't be the first time Clooney's script has been rewritten for Bullock, his role in 'Our Brand For Crisis' was eventually given to the 51-year old actress. The two also worked on the critically-acclaimed science-fiction film 'Gravity' and had been good friends for a long time.
Another article from Elle reported that screenwriter Olivia Milch had been working on the new screenplay for months before finally turning in the draft. The new reboot has reportedly been in the works since 2014 with the help of Clooney, Soderbergh, and the late producer Jerry Weintraub. When Weintraub passed away, it allegedly put the project on hold.
'Ocean's Eleven' is a planned reboot of the 2001 film starring Clooney and directed by Soderbergh. It was based on the original 1960 rat pack film of the same name. Soderbergh went on to direct two more films in the 'Ocean's' trilogy that earned a total box office revenue of $1.1 billion worldwide.
