ABC has officially ordered a back nine episodes from "Dr. Ken", a new comedy series starred and executive produced by Ken Jeong. The show’s first season will now run with a total of 22 episodes. In other news, the comedy has tapped "Fresh Off The Boat" actor Ian Chen to guest star in an upcoming episode.
As first reported by Deadline, the alphabet network has granted "Dr. Ken" a full season order following a stable performance in ratings. ABC has announced the news two weeks after the series premiere.
The new comedy stars "Hangover" star Ken Jeong as a brilliant doctor with no bedside manner who works at an HMO clinic. Jeong is joined by Jared Stern and Mike O’Connell as showrunners. Other cast members include: Suzy Nakamura, Tisha Campbell Martin and Jonathan Slavin. Currently, it airs every Friday at 8:30 PM on ABC.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Dr. Ken" was a “surprise hit” on ABC’s Friday block, landing the fourth spot on the list of freshman shows this year to score a full season.
"Dr. Ken" has been offering impressive numbers for ABC since its Oct. 2nd debut. The show is averaging with a solid 6.6 million viewers and a 1.5 rating under the 18-49 demographic. It also proved to be a strong competitor against NBC’s Friday 8pm comedy berth, according to the publication.
In other "Dr. Ken" news, the show has recruited "Fresh Off The Boat" actor Ian Chen to guest star this season.
Entertainment Weekly has learned that Ian will appear in an episode titled “Phil’s Phaves”, where he will make his debut as a neighbor Dave (played by Albert Tsai) “hires” to replace him.
Ian Chen’s recent TV guest appearances include: Modern Family (uncredited) and Grey’s Anatomy.
Just three weeks after its premiere, "Dr. Ken" has become an asset for the ABC. To this end, the network's full season order with "Modern Family" and "Grey’s Anatomy" child actor as guest star is expected to boost the comedy show's ratings more.
