'The Walking Dead Season 6' Episode 5 'Now' RECAP: Maggie pregnant, Will Glenn make it back?

By

In the latest episode of "The Walking Dead" Season 6 titled "Now," Maggie emotionally reveals that she is pregnant and that she fears for her husband's life. Viewers now see the present state of Alexandria, and more importantly its people, right after the "Wolves" attack and as the army of the dead incessantly knocks on their door. The walls could hold together for now, but the more important thing is, can the people hold themselves together too?

This episode tones down a little, from the first three episodes' explosive sequences to more poignant yet hopeful vignettes of each of the characters' disposition. Viewers could see the stark contrast between being inside the walls and surviving outside, though the one major thing they have in common is fear.

Glenn, Nicholas (though viewers know he's really dead), Abraham, Sasha and Daryl are still outside some miles from Alexandria with a massive horde of walkers threatening their every move, while Rick and the others anxiously await their return. With walkers of that magnitude, it's literally impossible to return to Alexandria unbitten, unless they cover themselves in zombie guts or go "Michonne style." But fans know these survivors are made of something else. They will get out of this moving mess of rotting flesh eventually. No spoilers there! Just being hopeful like the survivors back at Alexandria.

However, Maggie is extremely worried about her husband. She sets out to search for Glenn alone but Aaron sees her preparing to leave and shows her a tunnel that leads outside of Alexandria. As they reach the end of the tunnel, they see the herd moving close by. Just as Aaron begins opening the gate, Maggie stops him and says, "It's over!" and starts to cry admitting that she is pregnant. She emotionally tells Aaron, "I burned his (Glenn's) last picture because I said I wasn't gonna need it anymore, because I was never gonna be away from him again... If I was with him maybe I could've helped him. I don't know if he's alive, he would've showed me by now."

Knowing that Maggie is pregnant is actually good news for Glenn fans (for now, that is). Basing it on the events of the comic book [WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS!], Maggie does get pregnant with a son, who she names Hershel, and Glenn lives to be with Maggie in her pregnancy but not their son's birth. Because the much dreaded 100th issue which shocked TWD comic fans all over and even Steven Yeun (who plays Glenn) himself, reveals on its last few pages Glenn's real and gruesome death in the hands of the yet to be introduced villain, Negan.

Though it's not yet known how Maggie and Glenn's story will play out in the TV show. They do have the tendency to alter even the most major storylines and characters. But most fans say that Glenn's death in the comics is too big to pass off differently. Both comic book and TV show fans will just have to wait and see.

Meanwhile, there are moments in the episode where hope is still there despite the odds. Rick kisses Jessie with the hope of some kind of "future." Denise kisses Tara for being the ultimate cheerleader in her struggle to save lives at the infirmary. Rosita commends Spencer in his effort to keep the wall standing. Deanna kills a walker and got covered in walker blood for the first time. Maggie and Aaron erase Glenn and Nicholas' names on the memorial wall and Aaron teases Maggie that "Aaron" or "Erin" works for a boy or girl. Jessie steps up after killing a walker and says, "If we don't fight, we die."

"This is what life looks like now. We have to see it, we have to fight it," she says. This is what the episode, "Now," is all about. The Alexandrians need to see how life is now and they need to face it. Just as Rick, Maggie, and the rest of the survivors need to stay strong for themselves and their friends who are risking their lives outside the walls.

Stay tuned for the next episode of "The Walking Dead" on AMC, Sunday at 9pm.
