‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ Updates: James Gunn debunks rumor that Bradley Cooper spoiled Star-Lord’s father; Key character remains unknown

'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' is a sequel written and directed by James Gunn. The filmmaker was quick to debunk the rumors of Thanos being Star-Lord's father previously announced by Bradley Cooper during an interview. Cooper returns to voice Rocket the Raccoon in the upcoming film.

An earlier report from HitFix stated that Bradley Cooper may have inadvertently hinted at Star-Lord's father's identity. During an interview with MTV, Cooper was asked about the sequel's plot but said that he didn't know much about the film. He did, however, hint that the plot would involve a certain character's father being the villain.

Cooper, who voices Rocket the Raccoon in the series, let slip a particularly massive spoiler saying that Josh Brolin's supervillain Thanos was Peter Quill a.k.a. Star-Lord's father in the big-screen adaptation. He said, "[Josh Brolin] is the main villain, no? He was in the first one, he played what's his name's dad... Dark Lord, the main guy." According to Entertainment Weekly, his 'Burnt' co-star Sienna Miller who was there during the interview was quick to joke, "Oops ... you just leaked a Marvel script, Bradley."

Several media outlets immediately hopped on the rumor mill, however, Tech Times reported that director James Gunn spoke out to address the validity of statement. The filmmaker put the rumor to rest through his official Twitter account saying that Cooper has just received the new script and hasn't even gone through it yet. He tweeted, "That has not been revealed and Bradley doesn't know the main villain (or didn't at the time of the interview)."

Gunn previously announced that 'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' will reveal Star-Lord's father. The character won't be the same in the comic books and this has led to several fan theories. It seemed that Cooper simply got things mixed up or that he was simply joking around at the time the interview took place.

'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2' is a science-fiction action film written and directed by James Gunn. It is scheduled to be released on May 5, 2017 and will be part of Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase Three. Its predecessor was a massive cinematic success and earning $774 million against a $195 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo.
