Despite the first film's flop in the box office, Marvel is moving ahead with the upcoming Fantastic Four 2. While many revealed their opinion on why the project underperformed, Ant-Man director Peyton Reed shared his idea of what should be changed in the sequel.
Reed is no stranger in terms of knowledge of the Fantastic Four as he previously took part in developing the first film in 2005. As reported by GameSpot, while the first big screen attempt of the team was not hailed as the best feature released, Reed noted that the two big screen iteration of the popular superhero group are different.
Reed said that the film released in early 2000 was aimed at a younger audience, but the new Fantastic Four went for a darker direction. According to Cinema Blend, Reed said that the tone and visuals should be improved.
As Reed stated, the tones of the films have been very different and so a middle ground should be reached. "I just personally feel like they have not gotten the tone right. And man, it's a bummer. I think the tone has got to be one of optimism, and you've got to take it seriously", Reed said.
Furthermore, he also added that the visual effects for the new Fantastic Four 2 could be improved and added that careful attention should be put in Reed Richards' Mr. Fantastic. Nevertheless, Reed added that he believes the Fantastic Four franchise can still work.
Toby Kebbell who played as Dr. Doom previously revealed that he was disappointed of the reception but added that fans are not to blame as he considered them as honest indicators of whether they think the film was good or not.
Moreover, as reported by Screen Rant, he also pointed out the importance of collaboration during production. "I think it's vitally important that if there's a problem on set, that it's voiced and we solve it there and I think that collaboration is very important. Not to say that didn't happen on set, but the collaboration is vital and if we don't do that, then we suffer.", Kebbell said.
The first instalment was considered a flop after earning $167 million from its $120 million production budget. No director has been linked to the project, although Michael B. Jordan, Miles Teller, Kate Mara and Jamie Bell are expected to return. It is currently slated to hit theaters on June 9, 2017.
