PS4 Possibly Sneaking in Backwards Compatibility for PS2 Games

By

Microsoft made a lot of noise last week as they launched a new update that allowed backwards compatibility to over a hundred Xbox 360 titles, but it may seem that PS4 may have made the same move with less celebration.

Latin Post writes that the PS4 may very well have extended the PS4 console compatibility to classic games from the Playstation 2 console. This would expand the line of titles for Sony Entertainment to 1,850 titles.

Eurogamer recently got the Special Edition Star Wars Battlefront PS4, that includes a code for four downloadable titles: Super Star Wars, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, Star Wars: Racer Revenge and Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, says Tech Radar. As the team booted up the three old titles that ran on PS2, the old logo of the console appeared.

Further, reports claim that the system included a place to emulate a PS2 memory card to save game progress and simulations that gave directions on how to do so. Moreover, the original resolutions of 512 x 448 and 640 x 448 have been upscaled to the current resolutions of 1292 x 896.

With the recent slash of PS4's selling price, Sony is leading the race in console sales, reports Screen Rant. However, October belonged to Xbox One, thanks to the celebrated success of exclusive to Xbox titles - Halo 5: Guardians and Rise of the Tomb Raider. The Xbox Elite saw an immense roll out of units.

Microsoft expects the trend to continue with the release of the latest update that brings Windows 10 and backwards compatibility to the Xbox One console. But with the quiet coming of possible backwards compatibility by PS4, Sony just might be in the works to counter Microsoft's move.

Sony's intent to provide backwards compatibility has not been a kept secret. Officials of the company stated in the launch of Playstation Now that it is the intent and goal of the gaming provider to make the whole array of titles available to the PS4 console.
