Sherlock Season 4 Updates: Benedict Cumberbatch Too Busy To Return; Dr. Holmes' Character Might Get Recast

By

Even with an upcoming Christmas special for Sherlock, there are many speculations surrounding the fourth installment of hit TV series Sherlock and they mainly involve Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays the lead role of Sherlock Holmes. Series creator Steven Moffat answers the question on whether to replace Cumberbatch in the series.

According to Vine Report, scheduling became an issue when Cumberbatch's work lineup began to pile up. This includes a title role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as "Doctor Strange". Sherlock will need to adjust in order to accommodate Cumberbatch's schedule, therefore pushing the production of the fourth installment to a later date.

With the current state of the show, many fans have given theories on the show's future. According to Youth Health Mag, there are two options: "Sherlock" goes in line to fit Cumberbatch's schedule, or season 4 continues with a different Dr. Holmes. However, showrunner Steven Moffat enlightened the fans on these theories, saying that Cumberbatch is the only person for the role. Unlike the characters in his other show "Doctor Who", the role of Sherlock is irreplaceable.

"For example, once Benedict Cumberbatch gives up 'Sherlock,' what are we going to do? We are going to stop, that's what we are going to do," Moffat added.

It is noted that the Academy Award nominee's fame rocketed after portraying Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's famous character and that more projects have come. His partner Martin Freeman, who plays the role of Dr. John Watson, has different projects lined up as well. However, both actors have expressed their excitement to come back for "Sherlock" season 4, according to Franchise Herald.

Cumberbatch recently received his CBE from Queen Elizabeth herself and even gave her some details of his career.

"Her Majesty asked me what I was doing at the moment, and I told her I had finished a three month run at the Barbican, which she knew of," he revealed. "And I told her I had just got back last night from filming in Nepal, Doctor Strange for Marvel, then I'll be going straight into the fourth series of Sherlock."

Avid fans will have to wait for official statements on the future of Sherlock Season 4.
