The sequel to James Cameron's 2009 box office hit, Avatar 2, is currently underway, and several plot details suggest new addition to the Neytiri and Jake's family. Cameron also confirmed the return of Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang who were previously assumed to have died in the previous film.
Since the sequel was announced, not much details have been revealed regarding its plot. However, as reported by Bustle Cameron confirmed that the franchise will not only be a trilogy as he is planning to expand the Avatar universe into 3 more films.
Cameron also confirmed Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington's return as Neytiri and Jake Sully respectively. According to Movie Pilot, Saldana and Worthington will also be joined by Weaver and Lang although they were thought to have died.
Weaver is set to reprise her role as Dr. Grace Augustine who was an advocate for peaceful relations between Na'vi and humans. In the first film she was shot while trying to escape, and eventually died during the process of transferring her consciousness to her Avatar body in an effort to save her.
According to Cameron, the final decision of whether Weaver will return is on the actress' agent. "Who said she died? Nobody dies in a science fiction movie. Whether Grace lives or dies depends more on Sigourney's agent than anything.", Cameron said.
Aside from Weaver, Lang is also set to return as Colonel Miles Quaritch, and he is set to be the main villain of the next 3 instalments. Quaritch was killed by Neytiri in the first film with two enormous arrows to the chest, thus if he ever survived the attack, he is still likely to have received serious damage in his body.
Furthermore, Cameron also revealed that the oceans of Pandora will be explored in Avatar 2. As reported by Movie News Guide, a dark battle between the humans and Na'vi is also expected to ensue, where Neytiri and Jake will have to fight for their tribe. Meanwhile, new plot speculations also suggest that Neytiri and Jake will have kids in the upcoming film, and they will be half-human, and half-Na'vi.
The upcoming sequels Avatar 2, 3, and 4 are set to be filmed simultaneously. James Cameron will sit in the director's chair once again for Avatar 2, with screenplay her wrote with Josh Friedman. It is currently slated to hit theaters in 2017.
