According to Variety, Warner Bros. is in negotiations with Margaret Qualley to star as lead female in its upcoming live-action adaptation of the popular manga series 'Death Note'. The young actress and model is best known for her role as Jill Garvey in HBO's television series 'The Leftovers'. She is set to co-star with Nat Wolff, who was previously cast as the series' main protagonist Light Yagami.
The original Japanese manga series written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata follows the story of a young high school student who accidentally comes upon a supernatural notebook that gives its user the ability to kill anyone whose name is written on it. An anime adaptation soon aired in Japan from 2006 to 2007. A trilogy of live-action films soon followed and was released in Japan on from 2006 to 2008.
An article from Comic Book Resources speculated that Qualley may take on the role of Miss Amane. The character is a famous model who seeks out Light in order to help him and support his cause of cleansing the world from evil. She becomes infatuated with Light when they meet and ends up being an unlikely ally.
According to Science Fiction, the decision to cast two Caucasian actors in place of talents with Asian descent sparked protests among fans of the critically acclaimed series. They have taken to social media outlets to voice out their concerns against whitewashing in Hollywood films. Some vowed to boycott the film with many predicting its ultimate flop in the box office.
