After reaching its midseason finale, the fate of Awkward is still in limbo. However, the show’s executive producer remain hopeful that MTV will grant the rom-com a sixth season renewal. Meanwhile, series star Monty Geer has shared his high hopes for a spinoff on a recent report.
Speaking with TV Line following Awkward’s midseason ender, co-showrunner Mike Chessler weighed in on the show’s future.
“We’re hopeful that 5B is not going to be the end of the show. That’s not been determined yet, one way or the other,” the EP said.
He also allowed that season 5B will mark the end of Jenna and Matty’s early college life, and should they receive a season six, viewers should expect for a fresh chapter for the characters.
Co-showrunner Chris Alberghini, meanwhile, weighed-in on Matty and Jenna’s life and relationship in the future. Although it remains to be seen that the fan favorite couple will be together for a long time, he said that they will always have a deep connection with each other as Awkward continues.
Since MTV has announced last year that season five will be the final season of Awkward, the coming months will be a crucial period for the Ashley Rickards-starred series.
Series star Monty Geer, who plays Cole, expressed his feelings about the ending of the series.
“We told everyone it was the last season, but I have heard the show runners might want to do another season and if they do I would be very happy to continue with the show,” the actor told HollywoodLife
He also shared that although he’s doing his own thing right now, he would love to do more Awkward episodes -- while also teasing about a potential spinoff. “Imagine a Theo and Cole spinoff? That would be really fun. I’m sure after high school they would be up to some crazy things,” he enthused.
Awkward season five debuted weak last August, hitting its lowest premiere with a total of 1.2 million viewers and a 0.72 rating. The Nov. 9th midseason finale did not perform so good as well. It was watched by less than 1 million viewers and got a 0.40 in rating.
TV Series Finale have shared the ratings of Awkward season five in a report.
Awkward airs Mondays at 9 p.m. on MTV.
