Tech giant Apple is said to be making a big transition for the future of the iPhone, a transition that will involve the usage of a new display technology. After LG's newly introduced OLED TV, Apple is leaning on creating an iPhone with the same display features.
Forbes has reported that a consistent slew of rumors, leaks, and suggestions from the supply chain is pointing towards Apple working on adopting a new display technology for its future iPhones from the present LCD screens to OLED screens in the future, which is said to be in 2-3 years' time.
Apple has reportedly been reluctant in the past to make this switch because of worries around the lifespan of OLED screens, not to mention concerns of sensible per unit cost and whether its high yield production requirements would be met by the technology. Forbes speculates that with the new technology available, the company may have felt more confident now in the making the OLED shift.
An OLED display iPhone would provide numerous improvements for the phone. Geek notes that OLED would provide the iPhone colors more vibrant than what they are currently with its Retina Display feature, improved battery life even in dark interfaces, and are flexible as well, providing a possibility of a curved display iPhone in the future.
Apple has been currently meeting up with various OLED suppliers in providing this technology for future iPhones. While not currently in talks with Apple, Samsung has signified interest in supplying OLED screens as well, as Samsung is currently the only company that can manufacture OLEDs in significant volume.
Even though Apple has a relationship with Samsung already with the latter manufacturing Apple's A9 chip in the IPhone 6S and 6S Plus, other manufacturers are aggressive in supplying OLEDs for Apple. Digital Trends reported recently that LG is investing on an $8.7 billion facility in Paju, South Korea dedicated to manufacturing OLED screens of all shapes and sizes, partly as an effort to attract interest from Apple.
There is no information yet if OLED displays would be seen across all iPhones or if it will be offered to specific models only. However, the purported shift is still years away so details may arise or change by then.
