‘Overwatch’ Updates: Blizzard’s Game Director Announces ‘Overwatch’ Will Not Reach OS-X

By

Activision Blizzard's game director, Jeff Kaplan, noted that there will be a couple of technical problems to be encountered in the eventuality of an OS-X installment of their first-person shooter/MOBA hybrid Overwatch. However, Blizzard still made sure that Overwatch will reach out beyond its core PC audience, extending to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One gamers.

Blizzard has been known for porting their games across all platforms and ecosystems, but this time around, Mac users will not be able to play Overwatch on their machines, according to Tech Times. At Blizzard's yearly convention that was held in Anaheim, California, Kaplan stated they have exerted all their efforts into making the game run smoothly on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC platforms.

Kaplan was quoted saying during the last Blizzcon, "Currently with the technology behind Macs and the way Overwatch runs it's just too challenging for us at this point to support it." He also noted that Overwatch was made to provide great gameplay experience for both PC and console gamers.

Senior game designers Jeremy Craig and Michael Chu told Wired in an interview that they, at Blizzard, choose the platforms that feel great and suitable for the games they make. Chu said, "We thought about consoles for day one for this game because it's natural and there's no sacrifice between the PC version and the console version. They play identically, they play great because we thought about it from a combat standpoint, from a menu standpoint, all the ways you navigate through the game."

Blizzard is known for making MMORPGs and strategy games, but after almost two decades, the studio takes on the MOBA-shooter subgenre and launches its first completely new franchise, Overwatch. Blizzard steps into new territory with a multiplayer arena shooter filled with 21 original characters, each with unique superpowers.

Overwatch was described in a review made by IGN, as "more complex in its depth, thanks to the particular skills of each character, but for the fans of class-based shooters out there, it's easiest to look at it as a four-class shooter with pre-selected abilities, instead of as a confronting behemoth with 21 unique characters." It is advised that players find a character that matches their play style before learning the ropes.
