'Barbie' is a planned film that will feature Reese Witherspoon as producer as well as lead actress. She is set to star in the live-action adaptation of Ron Gerber's 2010 novel about the famous Barbie creator Ruth Handler.
According to the Mirror, Reese Witherspoon's production company Pacific Standard has reportedly secured the rights to create a film adapted from Ron Gerber's 2010 book 'Barbie and Ruth: The Story of the World's Most Famous Doll and the Woman Who Created Her'. Apart from possibly playing the lead role as creator Ruth Handler, Witherspoon will also be producing the film with her Pacific Standard partner Bruna Papandrea.
Witherspoon and Papandrea founded Pacific Standard together and released female-centric films such as 'Gone Girl', 'Wild' and 'Hot Pursuit'. The company was reportedly aggressive in its pursuit of acquiring the rights for the Barbie novel since 2012 in order to add more female-oriented films to the market. According to Entertainment Weekly, Pacific Standard has partnered with Bold Films for 'Barbie' - one which is entirely different from Sony's other Barbie project.
Gerber's novel follows the story of Handler who came up with the idea of Barbie while watching her own daughter Barbara playing with paper dolls. In the 1950's, dolls were often represented as infants and she eventually suggested the idea of an adult-bodied doll to her husband Elliot. The two were co-founders of the Mattel toy company and eventually introduced the first ever Barbie doll in 1959.
Bold Films will be financing the upcoming film, according to Variety. Its chairman Michel Litvak said, "Ruth Handler's inspiring true story reveals the triumphs and struggles of the genius businesswoman behind the creation of Barbie, the most iconic doll in the world." Handler's vision eventually turned Mattel into an internationally known toy giant and became influential in transforming women's roles in society.
'Barbie' is an upcoming origin film to be produced by Reese Witherspoon's company Pacific Standard. The 39-year old actress is also set to star as lead protagonist Ruth Handler, the iconic creator of the beloved Barbie doll.
