It's unlikely that someone will want to check their emails or Google something in the middle of a virtual reality experience, but in case someone does, Samsung has that covered.
The South Korea based company is rolling out another beta test of the Samsung Gear VR experience, and this one carries a web browser feature, and it's being called Samsung Internet, says Tech Times. The Samsung Galaxy S6, Galaxy Note or Note 5 handsets, when paired up with the upcoming Samsung Gear VR, will be given a general internet browsing capabilities.
According to Tech Crunch, the announcement was made by Samsung VP, Chan-Woo Park, who had this to say about the launch of the internet browser:
As a pioneer in the mobile VR industry, Samsung has continually worked to provide our users with a fully immersive mobile experience in the evolving world of virtual reality.
Park goes on to say that as the value and demand of immersive video experiences continue to increase, the Samsung Internet for Gear VR brings about a richer VR content ecosystem for Samsung consumers. This sets a standard for viewing experiences through the Gear VR.
The Verge says that applications may include watching YouTube videos without the use of the
mobile application. The new feature further supports "gaze mode" that lets users simply stare at things to select them, instead of having to tap on a trackpad.
The Gear VR web browser can now be downloaded through the Oculus Store and it comes with a support for voice commands and an on-screen keyboard. It also supports both 360 degree angle video streaming and HTML5 video.
The Samsung GEAR VR remains to be a low-cost virtual reality experience provider, now selling in the UK for just £80, as long as users have a Samsung Smartphone. It is now available in US and the UK as well.
