‘Shenmue 3’ Updates: Gameplay, Storyline Revealed

New updates regarding the third installment of the Shenmue series, Shenmue 3, has been revealed by its creator, Yu Suzuki. Updates on the gameplay, release date, and other game details were revealed as Yu Suzuki even travelled to China as part of his research work.

Suzuki shared information regarding the locations, development progress, and the battle mechanics of the game. He revealed that the entire story was written in 11 chapters; chapter 1 of which was revealed in Shenmue while chapters 2, 3, and parts of 4 and 5 were revealed in Shenmue 2. In the upcoming Shenmue 3, the rest of chapter 5 and the whole chapter 6 will be revealed. Vine Report further reveals that according to Suzuki, the story was written to be aligned with its structure, and the planning for the elements of the game which go along the storyline have all been completed. The development team is now said to be working on baseline research on Unreal Engine 4 for the upcoming game. As for the battle mechanics, the development team is currently testing the Destruction which refers to visuals of breaking objects and High Ground mechanics which refers to environmental interactivity.

Furthermore, Suzuki also teased the return of Ine-san and detailed some progress of the game. In addition, he said: "Unlike the development from 15 years earlier, we have assets already available to us and we are in an era where we can create prototypes even without a programmer." He added that the planning on programs and artwork have been closely related and a new work flow have utilized both game engines, reported Eurogamer. In the end, the creator hopes that such development leads to full enjoyment of the game.

On the other hand, the update also includes three images as prototype laid over screens from the second installment of the game. PC Gamer reports that there is also a poll which asks backers whether rewards offered as Kickstarter exclusives be extended to Paypal supporters.

While no official release date has been announced yet, Suzuki promised that more updates regarding the game's development shall soon be revealed.
