Developer Frontier Developments have recently announced the release of the Horizons expansion pack, the first of the four expansion plans for the Elite: Dangerous game. Unlike others, the Horizons expansion pack cannot be purchased on its own.
While there is still no official announcement of the release of the whole Horizons expansion pack, its Planetary Landings part is scheduled to release on December 15, which is only two weeks after the expansion's open beta was tested by the Elite: Dangerous community. iDigital Times revealed that the developers have released a short list of the contents that will be included in the upcoming Horizons release. The list includes loot and crafting systems, ability for crew recruitment, and the chance to change the appearance of the commander's avatar.
Planetary Landings, as Flickering Myth commented, plays a big part of the game across numerous worlds. Such is just a start of the Horizons series of expansions. Adding to the abovementioned features are ship-launched fighters, new missions and ships, and new close quarter combat arenas. Moreover, those who have pre-ordered Elite Dangerous: Horizons from Frontier Store shall receive an immediate game access and can start playing right away. The expansion shall also be available on Steam soon and Frontier Store customers may now have the choice of exporting their personal Steam keys to add to their Elite Dangerous: Horizons library.
The Horizons expansion is regarded by Frontier Developments as "a new season of expansions". Its Planetary Landings part, as PC Gamer reports has been buffed up in response to the beta feedback and forms part of the season. It itself will also be patched with Earth-like worlds as addition in to the yet to be revealed expansions.
The Planetary Landings part of the Horizons expansion shall be available for $60 for normal purchase starting December 15. On the other hand, existing Elite: Dangerous players can purchase it for $50. The Horizons expansion is only one of the four expansions for Frontier Developments' Elite: Dangerous.
