'Edge of Tomorrow 2' may feature the return of Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt as the main protagonists. Writer Christopher McQuarrie remained mum on details but hinted that ideas have already been thrown around for it. New speculations point to a possible crossover with 'Mission: Impossible 6'.

During an interview with Collider, writer Christopher McQuarrie revealed that the sequel of 2014's science-fiction film starring Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise may push through if things go as planned. He hinted, "We have the idea for the sequel locked and loaded. ... I don't know what I can say. I can only say it's a going concern."

McQuarrie was entrusted with the screenplay for Doug Liman's film that was first released on June 2014. He is known for penning several other blockbuster hits such as 'Valkyrie', 'The Tourist' and 'The Usual Suspects' where he won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. He also served as a director on 'The Way of the Gun' in 2000 as well as 'Jack Reacher' and 'Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation'.

According to Cinema Blend, Cruise and Liman are currently collaborating on a new film together. The upcoming film, Mena, is based on the real life story of former TWA pilot Barry Seal. Barry becomes a drug smuggler who was later recruited into the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) to supply intelligence.

Cruise starred in the first 'Edge of Tomorrow' film as Major William Cage, with Blunt as Sergeant Rita Rose Vrataski. The 53-year old actor famous for his roles on several action films including 'Mission: Impossible', 'Minority Report', 'War of the Worlds', 'Collateral' and 'Top Gun' reportedly favors doing his own stunts and did so in the film with Blunt.

Meanwhile, Australia News Network reported that rumors have emerged of 'Edge of Tomorrow' crossing over with the 'Mission: Impossible' series after it was announced that McQuarrie and Cruise have reunited for a sixth installment for the latter. Although no official statements have been made to confirm such a rumor, the odds of it ever happening seem slightly low to none as they belong in totally different universes.

'Edge of Tomorrow 2' is a planned sequel to Doug Liman's 2014 release of the same name. The first film is set in the future where Earth is invaded by aliens and humans are forced to defend themselves against the threat of attack. It earned $369 million against a $178 million budget and received generally positive reviews from critics.
