According to /Film, the much-awaited monster mash-up film is finally scheduled to be released some time in 2020. The announcement came after Warner Bros.' move to contain iconic cinematic monsters into one epic shared universe. The upcoming film pitting a giant ape and a massive reptilian creature follows the release of respective standalone films - 2017's 'Kong: Skull Island' and 2018's 'Godzilla 2'.
To lay the groundwork for the monster crossover, Legendary Entertainment moved the rights for 'Kong: Skull Island' from Paramount Pictures to Warner Bros. prompting the creation of a shared universe. According to ScienceFiction.com, the King Kong standalone film has finally began principal photography after years of being stuck in development. King Kong and Godzilla may be the two major headliners in the shared universe but other known kaiju such as Mothra, Rodan and King Ghidorah are said to make appearances as well.
Legendary's founder and CEO Thomas Tull revealed that the real reason behind the creation of 'Godzilla vs King Kong' was that he simply wanted to see the two monsters fighting on the big-screen, according to Variety. He admitted during a Business Insider's Ignition Conference that he was simply "juvenile".
Tull founded the company in 2000 and later went into agreements with Warner Bros. and Universal Studios to co-finance and c-produce their films. Legendary is best known for releasing numerous blockbuster hits including 'Steve Jobs', 'Jurassic World', 'Interstellar', 'Pacific Rim' and DC cinematic adaptations such as 'Man of Steel' and 'The Dark Knight'.
