Apple Inc announced that they have acquired two small companies, Locationary and HopStop. The acquisitions will boost Apple expertise in an area where the company has struggled. Locationary, based in Toronto, specializes in mapping data and maps. HopStop is an application that shows real time traffic updates and can also be used to get directions within city limits. Apple Inc did not disclose the terms of the deals.
"Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time," said Kristin Huguet, an Apple spokeswoman, "and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans."
Apple is deepening its mapping software since the introduction of Apple Maps on its iOS devices last year. Apple promoted the new maps app as a major feature for the iPhone 5, Apple's latest smartphone model.
Users for the Apple Maps software were bombarded with problems, like giving the wrong directions and downloading satellite photos that look like modern artwork instead of maps. Timothy D. Cook, Apple's CEO, posted an apology letter on Apple's Web site saying he was "extremely sorry" for any anguish that was caused by the app.
