Hotels hike room charges ahead of Commonwealth Games, caused public uproar

By

The Commonwealth Games attract a lot of tourists to visit and witness the event. However, ahead of the scheduled start of the game, hotels in Glasgow have been increasing their accommodation rates. The price increase was even higher when the London Olympics took place. Hotels in Glasgow had been labeled "greedy" following the price hike, reported DailyMail.

The public was alarmed and said that the price hike was too much. This was after budget hotels made an even higher increase for room accommodation prior the event than the increase when the 2012 Olympic Games were held in London.

The Glasgow Central Budget Apartments, a two star budget hotel charges GBP1500 a night while rooms in Glasgow Travelodges are charging tenants GBP180 per night. The Commonwealth Games has been scheduled to start on July 23 with more than 6000 athletes from 71 nations coming to Scotland from across the Commonwealth.

According to a representative of the Glasgow 2014, "It's important that a wide range of accommodation options are available to meet the needs of individuals, groups and families who plan to be part of the Games."
