Scott Asheton died last night at the age of 64. Asheton was the founding member and drummer of Iggy and the Stooges, a proto-punk band. The cause of the drummer’s death was not yet confirmed, reported The Guardian.

Asheton was born in Ann Arbor Michigan. He left the band temporarily in 2011 after incurring an injury. However, he returned to the band during the 2013 LP Ready to Die. Iggy Pop, the band’s frontman wrote on his Facebook page, paying tribute to his bandmate that read:

“My dear friend Scott Asheton passed away last night. Scott was a great artist, I have never heard anyone play the drums with more meaning than Scott Asheton. He was like my brother. He and Ron have left a huge legacy to the world. The Asheton’s have always been and continue to be a second family to me. My thoughts are with his sister Kathy, his wife Liz and his daughter Leanna, who was the light of his life.”
