"Terminator Salvation" was released in 2009, but the "Terminator" franchise hasn't seen a true, Arnold Schwarzenegger-starring installment in more than a decade. The last "Terminator" film to star the former California governor was "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines" in 2003.
Now, filming for the fifth in the series, "Terminator: Genesis," is underway in New Orleans, and the locals have been out and about trying to capture any footage of the filming in action. So far, images of various cast and crew members, cordoned off by police officers, have been captured and uploaded to social media.
Last month, the former governor was seen smoking a cigar and wearing a small amount of "Terminator" makeup. In the series, Schwarzenegger plays a cyborg with an entirely human exterior, and traditionally as each "Terminator" film goes on, more and more of the character's metal skeleton is revealed via battle damage.
In the photo, a small amount can be seen poking through his cheek.
Other recent photos show Schwarzenegger and co-stars Emilia Clarke, Jason Clarke and Jai Courtney. Clarke, the star of HBO's megahit "Game of Thrones," is playing Sarah Connor, a role originated by Linda Hamilton in the first two films. Jason Clarke is playing her son, John Connor, while Courtney will be playing Kyle Reese.
Time travel has long been rumored to be a part of "Terminator: Genesis," and the inclusion of both Jason Clarke and Emilia Clarke in the same scene seems to confirm that. Emilia Clarke, at 27 years old, is playing the mother of Jason Clarke, who is 44. Naturally, time travel would be needed for this relationship to work onscreen.
In the same photos, Schwarzenegger can be seen in a trenchcoat, looking significantly grayer than he has in his last few films. This has been written into the script, as Schwarzenegger's cyborg character will age externally, as his human outsides grow older.
The film will release on July 1, 2015.
