"Watch Dogs" has barely been on the shelves for a month, yet sequel talk has already begun.
The game, developed by Ubisoft, follows a hacker named Aiden Pearce, who uses his unique computer skills to seek justice after losing a loved one. Released this past May, the game has already broken a number of sales records. Having sold over four million copies in a single week, it's the biggest ever launch of a new game franchise in the United Kingdom, as well as the best selling first-day release in Ubisoft's history.
At this time, a sequel has not been officially announced, but speculation and anticipation from fans is bubbling over. A new report details fan speculation about a new "Watch Dogs" game, with fans wondering whether the sequel might take place in a different city, an what new kinds of technology it might implement.
Recently, Game Rant spoke to the CEO of Ubisoft, Yves Guillemot, to ask what the company's plans were for "Watch Dogs 2." Details were scarce, but it's starting to sound like the franchise may not follow Aiden Pearce as it moves forward.
When asked if Pearce will return for part two, Guillemot could only respond, "I can't say because I don't know actually. We'll see."
And when asked about the current trend of white male protagonists in video games, Guillemot had this to say:
"We are working on that. We want to spend more time on the worlds and characters in our games... you will see more and more of this at Ubisoft. We'll try to be less like we have been in the past with some characters. We'll try to extend more diversity."
Diversity has been a hot-button issue in the gaming industry as of late, with a number of publications calling out developers for failing to represent women and minorities in popular games.
It has yet to be seen if Pearce will actually be replaced in the upcoming sequel, or if fan support for the game and the character will keep him in for another installment.
