Coming off the massive success of "True Detective," HBO has been busy getting things together for a second season. So far, however, everything has been kept under wraps.
And unlike most shows, "True Detective" does not carry over from season to season. The show's first season, which followed two detectives, played by Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, as they were on the hunt for a serial killer in Louisiana, was wrapped up succinctly when the season ended back in March.
For the second season, an entirely new premise, cast and director must be found. Only Nic Pizzolatto, who wrote the entire first season, will be staying onboard for season two.
However, we might now know who will be coming on as a director in the second season. In an interview with The Playlist, director William Friedkin has confirmed that he is in talks with Pizzolatto to join the series.
Says Friedkin:
"I am considering it. I like this writer [Nic Pizzolatto] very much. I've met him, and he's the real deal as far as I'm concerned. Now, all the new seasons are different so I'm not committed-this new season has nothing to do with the last one. Except for him and his sensibility, which I think is extraordinary."
Friedkin later added:
"I'm... I can't say much more at this time. But I'm a fan of his writing, even though this will not be a continuation of what was done before with [Matthew] McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. So what you can say is I'm a huge fan of his writing, I've met with him, I like him, I like the direction he's taking with this."
Friedkin is best known for "The Exorcist" and "The French Connection" in the 1970s, although recently his film "Killer Joe," also starring McConaughey, was very well recieved.
How many episodes he is negotiating to direct is unknown, but Pizzolatto recently stated that in order to stick to HBO's time frame, more than one director will need to be hired for season two.
As is the premise for "True Detective" season two, although rumors point to three main characters instead of two- one woman and two men- and a setting in California, in the present day. Recently, actress Jessica Chastain was rumored for a lead role, but the rumor proved to be false.
It is not yet known when the second season of "True Detective" will premiere.
