Comic-Con Update: Will Director Gareth Edwards Show "Godzilla 2" Sequel at This Year's Comic-Con in San Diego? [Rumor]

By

San Diego Comic-Con is always a hub for the year's biggest film announcements. Like the last two Comic-Cons, where director Gareth Edwards displayed debut footage from this summer's reboot of "Godzilla."

Now, a new report indicates that we might get three Comic-Cons' worth of "Godzilla" in a row.

According to The Wrap, Legendary Studios (the studio behind the "Godzilla" reboot) has detailed which films it will be bringing to the famed summer convention. One, "Crimson Peak," is a haunted house horror film from director Guillermo del Toro (who recently helmed "The Strain" on FX). Another is "As Above, So Below," a found footage horror film set in the catacombs under Paris.

But a few of The Wrap's anonymous sources claim that Legendary might use their Comic-Con soapbox to reveal the first details for a "Godzilla" sequel.

There are several things to keep in mind here. One is that "Godzilla" director Edwards is currently busy with the "Star Wars" franchise, as he's been chosen to film the series' first spin-off, which will hit theaters roughly a year after "Episode VII" will. So Edwards himself might not have the time for Comic-Con, or to shoot any kind of preview footage. Any details we might see are probably conceptual at best.

Edwards, however, will be directing the next "Godzilla," even if he's schedule's a little busy. He's signed for "Godzilla 2" and "Godzilla 3," which will begin filming once he's finished with "Star Wars."

While details are extremely scarce about "Godzilla 2," Edwards previously spoke about potential sequel ideas, and cited "Destroy All Monsters" as the direction he wanted the series to go in. "Destroy All Monsters" is the 1968 film in the "Godzilla" franchise that saw Godzilla and a host of other monsters team up to fight a colossal alien threat.

San Diego Comic-Con will run from July 24 to July 27.
