More and more clues for the upcoming mystery/thriller film "Gone Girl" are surfacing online, most of which have already gone viral. In preparation for its October release, here's a look at some of the details we know so far.

The movie is based on a bestselling novel written by Gillian Flynn, who will also write the adapted screenplay. Directed by David Fincher ("Fight Club," "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," "The Social Network"), the movie stars Ben Affleck, Rosamund Pike, Neil Patrick Harris, Tyler Perry, Patrick Fugit, and Carrie Coon.

The story revolves around the disappearance of Amy Elliott Dunne (Pike), who disappears on her fifth wedding anniversary. There were a number of clues, such as a cutter stained with blood, an underwear, and a note that says "this man may kill me." Nick Dunne (Affleck), Amy's husband, is a suspect, but he swears that he did not kill her.

Twentieth Century Fox writes: "On the occasion of his fifth wedding anniversary, Nick Dunne reports that his wife, Amy, has gone missing. Under pressure from the police and a growing media frenzy, Nick's portrait of a blissful union begins to crumble. Soon his lies, deceits and strange behavior have everyone asking the same dark question: Did Nick Dunne kill his wife?"

"Gone Girl" has a unique marketing style, using social media to give clues. In December 2013, Fox released its first still from the movie showing Affleck speaking on a microphone, with a poster of his missing wife in the background.

Reese Witherspoon, one of the film's producers, saw the book's potential in 2011, after co-producer Leslie Dixon introduced it to her. Filming started on 2012, with the crew filming shots that did not need actors.

The first trailer, which was released in April 14, quickly went viral on social media. This was followed by a second trailer, released on July 7.

In an interview, Flynn said that the film will veer from the novel and will have a different structure.

The film will be scored by Fincher collaborators Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails) and producer Atticus Ross, who both won an Academy Award for their work in "The Social Network."

"Gone Girl" will hit theaters in October 3, 2014.
