"NBA 2K15" isn't just about the basketball, even though it is a game about basketball.
Just as important as the stats and the players are the songs pumping from the soundtrack. And while we know that the game is set to release in October, we don't yet know any major details about what songs or what artists will be featured in this year's installment of the colossal basketball gaming franchise.
Now, however, Billboard has the first details. Where before, Jay-Z and LeBron James were in charge of the soundtrack for previous NBA games ("2K14" and "2K13," respectively), current music superstar Pharrell Williams will be in charge of the tracks for this year's installment of the franchise.
Williams made the announcement at a press conference in Manhattan, claiming that "I had some people from my staff -- they were all girls and women -- and we just talked about it. I was like, 'I have to do this, [but] I don't know if I'm gonna be able to pull this off, because Jay did it and LeBron.' I'm like, man, how do I follow up those guys? They know so much more about the sport than I do."
Williams may have his share of jitters, but its doubtful the execs at 2K Games feel the same way. Williams is an enormous commodity right now- being able to stamp his name on the cover of every copy of "NBA 2K15" will likely boost sales even higher than they're already expected. The company also mentioned that the game boasts the "largest and most eclectic" soundtrack in franchise history.
While none of the songs are known, Williams let slip that System of a Down and Strafe will both feature in the game. Reports are calling it the "biggest soundtrack ever."
Sharing the cover with Williams' name is Kevin Durant, the league MVP who will wear his Oklahoma City Thunder #35 Jersey. Making it onto the cover of an "NBA 2K" title is a big achievement- LeBron James was the cover athlete on last year's edition.
As well, a new video details some of the improvements made to the gameplay, and how "2K15" will differ from "2K14" and other previous basketball games.
The video can be seen below.
"NBA 2K15" will hit stores on October 7, 2014.
