Carrie Underwood won Fox's hit show American Idol way back 2005, but apparently, there are still royalties waiting to be paid to the country singer.
The Hollywood Reporter wrote about the request for a New York federal judge to come up with an early decision for the case filed against Sony. The lawsuit was filed earlier this year by 19 Recordings against the Sony for withholding royalties from some AI winners and contenders such as Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken, and Kellie Pickler.
The lawsuit claims that the singers were no paid with the due royalties that sum up to at least $10 million. The amount includes sales from music paid for and downloaded through online platforms such as Spotify and iTunes.
19 Recordings was founded by Simon Fuller, who is the creator of AI. It is now under the management of the show's owner, Core Media Group.
The lawsuit filed by 19 Recordings claims that Sony Music has been robbing them millions of dollars in royalties. It was filed after 19 used their right to audit Sony's books according to the recording agreements and after no settlement was made between the two parties. The suit seeks at least $10 million in damages.
Sony filed last June a motion requesting the court to dismiss the charges against it. The company's request, however, was not favored by the court.
Underwood has not given any comment about the lawsuit and the request for early ruling. The AI Season 4 winner has been busy on her tour and performing for several award shows and festivals. She recently completed recording her duet with Miranda Lambert. The duet entitled "Somethin' Bad" will be part of Lambert's new album.
Underwood announced last June that she is currently working on a new album she described to have a "different style." The singer did not give further details regarding the album's title. Underwood's last album was "Blown Away" which was released two years ago.
