This week, female empowerment has overcome the brawny action offering starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Wall Street Cheat reported. "Lucy," the action film, which is brought to the big screen by French writer-director Luc Besson of "The Professional," "Femme Nikita" fame, has Scarlet Johansson playing the lead role as a reluctant drug mule whose mind has been unlocked by the leaking drugs sewn up by a foreign mafia.
They say the regular human can access only a small percent of their brain...but what if you could access 100% of it? Just how powerful is the human mind and how dangerous can it be for someone, with a lust for vendetta. These are said to be the basic questions Johansson's character attempts to solve as she comes to the terms of her growing powers. IMDb said Johansson eventually receives invaluable help from Professor Norman (played by Morgan Freeman), who in the film, is the leading authority on the human mind, and French police captain Pierre Del Rio (Amr Waked).
In its weekend debut, "Lucy" scored estimated $44 million at the box office, lording over "Hercules," who trails at second place at $29 million, based on Box Office Mojo figures. Moreover, it has been determined that "Lucy" appealed to both male and even moviegoers, while "Hercules" viewers are 58% male. On the other hand, the film currently holds a lackluster 58% Rottentomatoes fresh rating from critics, while audience gave the film an average 51%.
The review read, "Enthusiastically silly, Lucy tries to power through its logical gaps with cheesy thrills and Scarlett Johansson's charm -- and partly succeeds. "
On the other hand, the ratings may not matter, considering that Besson has managed to pull in huge box office draw considering the modest budget it used to work on the film, Wall Street Cheat said. Considering the fact that "Lucy"s box office sales is almost half of the amount the fourth "Transformers" film has raked in and that a female actor has been cast as the main protagonist in an action role, it was a rare, albeit successful feat that would have Besson, Johansson, Freeman and the people behind the film to laugh all the way to the bank should the film continues to pick up.
