With a mere five months to go before the release of the final "Hobbit" film, Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies."
It's a doozy of a trailer, which shows off the massive conflict at the center of this final "Hobbit" film (it's also the conflict the film was named after). In the trailer, we see Bilbo Baggins (played by Martin Freeman), Gandalf (played by Ian McKellen) and Thorin Oakenshield (played by Richard Armitage) as they gear up to fight both an incoming army of Orcs, and the powerful Smaug, the dragon unleashed at the end of the second film, "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug."
While none of the major plot points are spoiled in the trailer, it teases just enough of the film's colossal action scenes to tantalize those looking forward to the final "Hobbit" film.
At Comic-Con last weekend, director Peter Jackson spoke on "The Battle of the Five Armies," describing the impact of the third film and its relation to his original "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.
"It's always great when you can kill off some main characters," Jackson said. "You have the chance to do something powerful and emotional. We do get to kill a few of them this time around."
"It's not as comical as the first 'Hobbit' movie. It's getting closer to the tone of 'Lord of the Rings,'"
That makes sense, given that the film's recently released official synopsis makes a specific mention of Sauron. Sauron, of course, was the original villain from "The Lord of the Rings."
Here's the part of the synopsis that dealt with Sauron:
"Obsessed above all else with his reclaimed treasure, Thorin sacrifices friendship and honor to hoard it as Bilbo's frantic attempts to make him see reason drive the Hobbit towards a desperate and dangerous choice. But there are even greater dangers ahead. Unseen by any but the Wizard Gandalf, the great enemy Sauron has sent forth legions of Orcs in a stealth attack upon the Lonely Mountain."
A recent poster, seen above, also includes the tagline "The Defining Chapter."
"The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" will release on December 17, 2014.
