The breathtaking finale of "Chicago Fire" Season 2 left fans asking who will survive the explosion that occurred while the entire crew of Firehouse 51 was inside the burning abandoned building.
Showrunner Matt Olmstead told TV Guide, "Not everybody makes it out of the building."
"And then certainly what people deal with in terms of the loss of whomever that character is, that's definitely what we're dealing with in the first episode and beyond," he continued.
The series is known for its brave moves of killing main characters. In the series' two-season history, three main characters died already. The premier of the upcoming season will show which character dies. Matt Olmstead said that the character's death will significantly affect other members of the crew.
"This will be the death of a character that you're much more invested in," Olmstead revealed. "It's this family that takes a hit, and how do you come back from it? It's been done before, but not to this extent. The loss of a main character is a big deal," he added.
According to Fashion & Style, Lt. Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer) and Gabrielle Dawson (Monica Raymund) are some of the characters that are most likely to survive. The two might get engaged as Matt proposed to Gabrielle in last season's finale.
According to reports, Lieutenant Severide survives. But no one can confirm it yet.
"As we've established on the show, he (Severide) is prone to going off on his own and having a few cocktails when things don't go his way," Olmstead told TVLine.
The actor said that it "might cause a problem with him and Lindsay. The thing we like about him and Lindsay is they're cut from the same cloth. They don't judge each other. No one's ragging on the other person for not being available. They're really similar."
Fans of the NBC drama series will have to wait until September 23 to know who among the characters survived the explosion.
